05.03.2025 - Video: QUOD INIT EXIT IIo / preview #8QUOD INIT EXIT IIo is a platformer with original mechanics, a few puzzle elements and an unprecedented graphical engine, that you can download as a playable preview from here. Update: Finally one more zone (i.e. level) of the game is complete! Enter the mad scientist's TOWERS! (Yes, it's also a tribute to a certain famous C64 game.) Making this zone has been even tougher than the other ones due to the fake 3D perspective, which increases the already extreme complexity of drawing the tiles, designing the map and writing the zone-specific code. Moreover, the maps of the CLIFFS and FORTRESS zones has been made bigger and better and all the rest received quite a number of improvements too!

04.03.2025 - One Giant Pixel? Exploring $D020 and VIC-II/6510 Timing- video by '8-Bit Show And Tell'The VIC-II video chip in the Commodore 64 has a control bit that will cause the screen border to cover the entire screen, filling the whole screen with whatever colour is currently in the border colour register, location 53280 or $D020. This sort of makes the entire screen one giant pixel, but of course it's much more complicated than that when you start considering constant dynamic interaction between the 6510 CPU and the VIC-II. There's actually a lot that can be done with just that one colour register, and when we start modifying it and counting CPU cycles, we can learn a lot about how the system works.
